Elephant In The Room!

Watching the mid night show while wolfing down a sandwich was almost a regular view in Sofia's living room. Drained from her work and with almost zero social life, she literally found the TV and food as her true companions. First yawn signaled her first thought of calling it a day. She, however, sat tight in the couch and waited to go out like a light because that was the point when she would hotfoot to the bed.

In all that waiting, watching and thinking, her heart popped in her chest as the door bell rang. All the signs of sleep and visuals on the TV were pushed to the periphery of her brain and she found herself thinking who might be visiting at this hour.

From the inside, peephole, showed Sara freezing on the outside.

Both the girls settled in, holding the mugs of hot-chocolate; waiting for the other to break the ice. Sofia knew why Sara was there and she also knew why she chose Sofia out of all the people to turn to, after the much expected has happened. Since Sofia had a closely knit circle of two or three friends, and was the kind of person who had always ensured a low key and private life, confining things into her had always been the safe bet.

With the exception of Sofia, no one really knew where Sara was coming from when she would speak passionately for women rights. If at all they knew how she survived the violence and vilifying back home and courageously made her way to reach her safe haven, here in the States, she would have received an inordinate amount of attention which was at the bottom of her wishlist.

She started anew, leaving her past behind and was over the moon to had been able to avail the chance of leading her life way she always had desired to. However, universe had altogether a different plan designed for her and her short-term bliss came to an end when her immigration issues started to surface post recent election.

Aftermath?

She was in shambles.

Returning to Afghanistan was no less than a plight. All at once she started to hating the fact as to why one country's law and other country's lawlessness were the decisive forces of her life. The country to which she belonged to, did not allow her to lead a 'normal' life and the country which allowed her to lead a 'normal' life did not accept her.

"Sara, I am still unable to find a solution" said Sofia finally breaking the silence. "The lawyer said after your appeal got rejected we have almost no way out and I am honestly clueless on how to ensure your deportation a wrong idea. Nevertheless, we are still trying hard to get you through this debacle".

That was enough for Sara. She had all her answers received. She did not have time to hang around at Sofia's place and feel the noose getting tighter around her neck. She needed some fresh air. She wanted to leave before she loose her mind and sanity.

And she left.

Sleep was not going to come to her now. Laying in bed, her eyes fixed at the ceiling, Sofia pictured Sara being deported after two days.

With every step Sara took, she thought to herself if she had to die she would ensure to do it here - not there after two days.

According to Migration Policy Institute, the role of immigrants in the labor market, illegal immigration, humanitarian admission policies and enforcement practices are often raised. However, global displacement is a growing concern especially with the number of immigrants in the US increasing to as much as whopping 43.3 Million back in 2015; significance of immigration reforms is greater than ever before.

Would building walls and deportation help resolving the burgeoning issue at hand?
