When Silence Breaks - We Are Awake!
I am a movie buff and keeping in touch with some art in one way or the other is sure some sort of respite from my tight schedule. Reading Vogue and following Entertainment & Arts section in the newspapers keep me well acquainted with whats going on in the Tinseltown and subsequently helps keeping me a tab on the celebs and famous people.
However, entertainment got a bit too sour a few days ago when the New York Times published something that led to the onward painting of disturbing and can-make-you-flinch type of stories. Multiple accusations from having a background sprawled over three decades makes the film mogul no more than a pervert in my eyes.
Its like all those contrived stories revolving around drama rather intense drama that appear on screen for our entertainment have been actually going behind the scenes. Being completely honest I am not surprised with this and what we usually term as 'sensational scandal'. However, I do feel super bad on how things kept rolling smoothly infact 'very smoothly' for Wisntein up until he got exposed.
Poignant of all things is what has been happening is endemic in the societies across the world. Even alarming is that the sensitive issues like harassment, abuse and rape are still a source of embarrassment for the victims. Where part of the world has told women to hush up to avoid the stigma that will come attached as a part and parcel of it, the other part of the world has the women who choose to remain silent out of fear of losing the chances/prospects that guarantee them success. Worse of all, it can go to even losing their case if they are not equipped with the proper evidences or resources that can evidently show they are not making things up especially against someone 'powerful'.
Moral dilemma is we at large still are never sure how to deal with these things when they are out there. Doubting someone who reveals things after a long while, 'Why didn't she speak earlier? Oh she seems sketchy'! can snuff the hope out of anyone who for once at some point of time thought to tackle things differently.
We might think Harvey Weinstein was the only wolf around but sadly there are alot many and almost everywhere who will be getting away with what they want and will ultimately unequivocally discard the allegations later by terming it all as consensual and not forced even if it was latter. Despite knowing deep down in the bottom of their hearts they know they were exploiting someone while 'that someone' is equally to be blamed to not to voice their situation and just accepting things out of fear for one thing or another.
Overall, muting down and silence has let the 'predators' go unpunished and unaccountable for as much as three decades which sure is a lion share of a victim's as well as the predator's life.
Is it right?
None of us in the right frame of our minds will consider it right. However, I know one thing for sure it has to be set right in timely fashion rather than pushing things way too far to be even talked about because your conscience tells you are strained enough to know even right from wrong. Please know there is no middle ground to this issue and there is no grey involved. If you are silent, you are participating inadvertently and giving rise to more horrific tales every passing day. Speak to the authorities or do what you think will stop the advancements because what you deserve is fair treatment which is your birthright and therefore should not be considered as a favor extended by anyone.
A gossip column turning into a headline and then a story that is being constantly talked about for days by people strongly suggests that when silence breaks we are awake!
