Square Peg In A Round Hole!
Hey! Can I use your phone for a minute as mine has died and I need to place an urgent call. She said to him hastily.
Sure! Lifting his head up from the book he was reading he handed her the phone.
Ring. Ring. Ring. No answer. He saw her nimble fingers starting to type something and she handed him back his phone.
How long will you be here because I'm expected to receive a response on your phone.
Umm I will stay until you get a response. He noticed a sense of relief in her as she sat across the table.
Coffee shop was now filling in with the people. He noticed their gaze on her and her eyes on his phone. Somehow her fragility wanted him to protect her and to help here; therefore, he couldn't resist asking her directly if he could do anything else.
Sometimes I feel like I'm a magnet to trouble. I really don't know the last time I laughed without faking it and he saw her eyes welled with water as she opened up.
Do you know why I have come to you asking for your phone?
'Would love to know' he said looking at her curiously.
You did not look at me the way others were looking at me. My boots, my make up, the whole attire is giving away the profession I am in. I know I am an odd ball here but I am waiting for the man who told me he would be here to pay me my money. Well, and here I am waiting for him being judged and scorned off passively and she looked away out of the window hiding her pain.
How old are you? he asked her.
21!
He pursed his lips. Can I ask you what makes you do what you do?
'Money' she said without any hesitation.
For?
My father. He is in the hospital. I told him I am doing a highly paid internship. He doesn't know I am a High School drop out. I need money for the high medical expenses which cannot be met by working at McDonald's.
He looked at her for a long time and then finally asked her if she wanted to go back to school?
He heard her phone buzzing.
Unknown caller ID. He handed her the phone.
With faint smile she thanked the person on the opposite side of the phone and grabbed her bag to leave.
Thanks for being so wonderful to me. You are a good man. She placed her hand on his.
Are you sure you don't want to go back to school?
I do. But I don't want to dream of something that is not likely to happen and she turned on her heels to get out of that suffocated place where a number of set of eyes were following her.
Wait. Why do you think it's not possible?
Three different people in the past said the same. Sometimes how is more important than why and I don't see how it is possible. Let me remember you as a good man she said with a faint smile to see her father leaving him feel poignantly helpless.
